Hi everyone, there’s been quite a lot going on in my absence over the last couple of days. I’ve had a look at Slags original “Sketch Show Recommends” thread and popped it into more of chronological order, also adding in a the odd concern that’s arisen. Saves people reading through everything again.
THOSE THAT CAN TAKE PART-
Anyone with a date of joining the forum before the idea was suggested. Newbies would need to “prove” themselves and be invited by a project memeber
SCRIPTS-
Length- This seems to have sparked off the most concern. It has been agreed to take this to a forum vote. I think most people are agreed that we should put a limit on the length of script so that everyone gets a fair crack, but the question is how long. Also there have been concerns raised about the project becoming too monotone if all scripts are a similar length. Also, if people were to enter longer scripts, there is always the option on breaking them into 2 or 3 smaller parts if the script allows.
Tone- Post watershed, but mainstream. Sensible use of profanity and sexual situations. Possibility of editing suggestions if people feel scripts over step the mark?
Style- There should be no set style.
Theme- There should be no topic or theme linking the scripts.
Format- Set industry format for submissions. Template to be provided (Script Smart?)
SUBMITTING SCRIPTS
Each person can contribute one sketch at the submission stage. Each with a resubmission allowed (Are they allowed one resubmission, or until the deadline?)
DEADLINE
I may have missed this somewhere, if so I’ll edit. As far as I’m aware there will be 2 deadlines, one for submissions, one for resubmissions. I imagine we will need to set a third re editing?
VOTING AT SUBMISSIONS STAGE
All project members are eligible to vote at Submission stage, whether they have contributed or not. They should vote for or against each sketch. Sketches reach 50% approval will be submitted, those that don’t will be submitted to a critique stage where suggestions can be taken on board to raise above 50% stage.
EDITING-
1) Sketches that failed to pull 50% of members' approval should be opened to allow discussion between author and other members to discuss suggestions for improvement / editing / alternative endings? The author always retains the right to veto
2) As in all projects of this kind, it may be necessary to edit at the script compilation stage. Nominated and accountable committee members will edit sketches, as and when required. To make the whole process transparent, these edits will be reposted to the group with reasons and or comments as to why and where edits were made. The author retains a veto; however, use of veto will require a new submission.
FILMING-
Agreed to film the script, with intention of sending samples to production companies. No urgency as yet.
Sorry if it's going over old ground, but hopefully it'll save people a bit of time. I think if you read through as well , the only real obstacle at the moment is the length issue (we all have that problem don't we boys eh? Don't we?Boys? Don't leave me hanging... Boys?) But once the voting procedure is in place that'll be resolved and we're underway. So although there has been a lot of talking, I think we have come to agreement on a lot of issues, and it should save headaches in the future

I think the committee has done grand work here and deserve our thanks and praise. My only comment would concern the "no themes" suggestion as I think a running joke throughout an episode or even a series can work very well.
Perhaps if characters emerge who we really like - maybe someone like the hippy in the original bacon and herring sketch - writers could use that person or format for further submissions. Obviously, the theme would have to be agreed, rather than people just picking up and running with something they liked while everyone else ignored it!
Just a thought.

Thanks for that summary GJ.
Just a thought, but when it comes to filming, is the intention to use the same group of 'actors' for all sketches, similar I guess to News Revue? If so, then, to an extent, the continuity of cast will be a theme that helps the whole thing hang together.

No, it will take time. I've been real busy too. But it doesn't mean that we can't be thinking about submissions to prepare writing / possible themes that will make us all go 'wow'. We can use this time to prepare. Perhaps we could even suggest to writers particular sketches of theirs that you think are ones they should consider subbing.

If most of the committee is busy this will obviously slow things down a bit, I'm sure another meeting can be arranged soon to iron out some of the last few problems as you mentioned Slag.

Is there a rough 'time frame' for the sketch show project? Just so I know.

Hi, I'd like to be involved so how do I go about that? I have many sketches I can put in for the vote and also I work as a cartoon and 3D designer so that could be put to use. Just this week I've been replying to some people and I've put together concept designs how my sketches could possibly be made into either short cartoons, 3D animations or live acted sketches against cgi characters. A bit like monty pyhton but with modernised visual.
Like most people of my generation I did media studies and pretty well too but I didn't choose to continue that course after sixth form. I have also recently started getting involved with being a extra, I was in Torchwood and was in a film for The History channel about Christopher Columbus so I would also be happy to contribute to filming and I am more than capable of editing using Adobe Premier
Anyway I'd be interested to be involved if possible
If its funny why arrest me?

No problemo Scott, you've been knocking around on the site for a while. If you have a read through my post above, thats pretty much where we're up to. Mark is currently building a voting system for us which will be up and running soon, and then we should be just about set for people to start submitting sketches. Nothing to stop you writing in the mean time though!

I look forward to it being up and running, it should be greatly interesting and no doubt much fun. Its a shame you can't post pictures on these threads as I would like to show the concept designs Ive done for my own show which could possibly be used for this.

I have looked on your website Scott and have found your pictures very aardman-like in design. Have you heard of s childrens sketch show called "planet sketch"? (I tried writing for them once.. I dont sit and watch it) they have animation very much like yours and are produced by aardman (of course). So it can't be bad at all really.
