Like most people, I've always thought the Friends spin off "joey" was pretty horrific, unsurprisingly. However! I've just been reading over the pilot episode script, and believe it or not, on paper, it's actually quite funny. Have I lost all sense of a sense of humour, or was it really just the actors and director/producer who destroyed what appears to be a rather funny script?

"Alex: Oh, actually I got my first impression last night. I saw you out here practicing your (Unsure) Judo?

Joey: Oh, that wasn’t Judo. I had a bee on me."

I am not a Friends fan nor a Joey one.
I prefer Superted.

I would do him though.

Forgive me!

I bet the script was quite funny. Then Joey Deacon ruined it. :)

Funnily enough, I've read a couple of Joey scripts in the last few weeks and have found them to be amusing too. The problems Joey faced was that all the jokes would be dim jokes, plus they didn't create real depth in the characters. His nephew was pretty good but the sister and neighbour were unappealing.

It's good to know I'm not alone David! I agree. Joey's character had already been pushed to the limits of the ridiculous in friends, turning him into a rather annoying caricature. Then on top of that, as you say, the sister and neighbour were awful. No appealing qualities to them at all. After reading the scripts, it feels as though the prouducers were so desperate to get it out to the public, that no time was given to the writers to developing the core relationships. It's a shame really, there are some good jokes hidden beneath all the rubbish.

Season 1 had loads of great gags in it, really funny.

"Not all sons wants to kill the father and marry the mother"
"That was ONE drawing I did!"

Really under-rated actually, and while obviously not as good as Friends at it's best - still funnier than the last few seasons.

Then season 2 rolled in and one of the exec producers left, a character was added for no reason then Eddie-but-not-Eddie came into it and it went shit.

Comedy is the aces.

Hahaha see! That's really funny!

I suppose people were biased against it before it'd even begun. If only it hadn't been JOEY maybe it would have worked.

I think the main problem with Joey was how uneven it was. certain moments of certain episodes were genuinely very funny, but there was too much that fell flat. Joey's relationship with his nephew, and also his agent Bobbi were excellent. His relationship with Alex seemed very unoriginal. also, what happened to his actor friend who (despite having never previously appeared) went from best friend to never mentioned again. Kudos to Mat Le Blanc for gettin paid for the whole 5(?) seasons he signed up for.

Well, I liked it quite a bit. Certainly enjoyed it all the way through.

There's one scene that was funnier than anything in Friends when he goes to view the house he eventually buys.

Woman: That's a cute baby. What's his name?
Joey: Erm... Hiemlich!
(Woman walks off)
Gina: Hiemlich!? That's weird!
Joey: Oh? Weirder than the robot baby I had with my sister?

Joey on his own is like Basil without Manuell, or Manaring without Jones. Rubbish.

Agreed, I found myself watching the show out of pity for the actor who seems like a nice guy.
