Really disappointed. I expected a lot after all the hype. Stereotypical poorly played characters and an unimaginative storyline. I hope to God it get's better, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Please prove me wrong in the next episodes I will be tuned in. ;-)
 

Shit, more of 'that voice', poorly written characters, hardly any jokes, it's style was like Arrested Development but when you try to draw that comparison this show was never going to come out on top as AD is one of the finest comedies of the Noughties. I mean come on, 'spankies' for gods sake, I don't understand why stuff like this gets commissioned.

In Summary Compared to what I've seen from Whitehouse and Hill tonight most of our Supposed Comedy output should be written off - Romans Empire included!

Congrats to Paul Whitehouse & Harry Enfield and all involved with the show for a first episode this is what's about IMPRESSING and making you laugh!!!

Makes you realise how crap Catherine Tate + are. how low have the brit publics expectations become?

I thought it was really good. Not brilliant, but definitely has potential. Chris O'Dowd seems to have the best character in this.

Was it just me who thought Roman was alot like the Denholm character from The IT Crowd?

I wasn't impressed at all. I'm not going to pass my judgement yet, but an unimpressive first episode for me. I hope next week's is significantly better.
 

Yeah I didn't like the first episode much either, it was ok watching I may watch the rest of the series but not with much interest

Right -- I'm quite forgiving of comedy (much more than a *lot* of you!) so can say I enjoyed it. It was good, well acted and made me laugh. I do have an appreciation of how hard it is to actually write a sitcom since I've been trying myself.

Now the proper rant begins. It's written by Harry and Jack Williams, who are very young at 25 and 28 and the sons (I am led to believe) of novelist Nigel Williams.

It strikes me as just another example of who you know, not how well you write. Don't get me wrong, they obviously can write but they're not *so* much better than the writers on here that they should be fast tracked straight to BBC2.

I also may be completely wrong. They may very well have sent their unsolicited script into the BBC Writers' Room and got commissioned that way. But I very much suspect that it was passed on through connections in the industry.

In fairness, it could have been the best sitcom ever written and this fact would royally piss me off. It's not though. But it's not that bad either.

I feel better now

Hmmm good point Swer, Fortunately it's not as bad as acting but it's true I guess if you know the right people you will get your stuff looked at by the right people and even worked on by the right people to make it presentable for TV.

I thought it was terrible. The only thing that kept me interested was the girl but that's it. BBC Comedy has forgotten how to be funny.

 

I agree with the comment about it being like Arrested Development, only not nearly as good. There was just something about the whole thing that didn't gel. I heard the guy who was in it on Jonathan Ross saying they got 1.2 million viewers for the first episode. I guarantee that within a few weeks that number will have fallen to below one million and it won't get a second series. And while we're on the subject of Arrested Development ripoffs, wasn't the Robinsons mentioned somewhere else on this forum just another AD immitator that fell at the first hurdle?
 

1.2 million viewers... isn't that quite low for a prime time sitcom on BBC2?
