I happen to have seen the first couple of episodes... I enjoyed it, it's aimed at the young 'Skins' market, but does in the main manage to cross over into appealing to all. They've certainly done a good job of accurately re-creating what it was like to be that age (definitely more so than Coming Of Age has)

Much more details to follow in our in-depth, coming next week.

Agreed, I also agree with the Coming Of Age comment. I enjoyed the clips, especially the frisbee and MILF ones.

Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Is it a sitcom proper, or a "comedy drama".

Comedy drama with a heavy sitcom element. It's not a studio sitcom though so don't expect obvious one-liners.

The characters are all like-able: I think it's nice they've gone for the other end of the spectrum (they're 'average' slightly geeky kids in The Inbetweeners, and thankfully not like the supposed drug-taking all-night-partying parents-don't-care kids in Skins)

Seen the clips from this on the website, looks like more typical E4 Skins type stuff. Wank jokes mainly.

It's a shame because there is a need for a 'school life' sitcom on TV, but these type of shows always feel as if they are written by middle-aged men and their ideas of what 'school life' is like. And yeah some bits are accurate but the jokes tend be fully focused on what kids find funny at like 12 years old and it's fine to show that side of school life but that can't be your actual main joke, in my opinion.

Plus they always seem to be very upbeat and colourful with a bouncy indie soundtrack and shot in an American style.

I want a more realistic school life sitcom. A British equivalent to Freaks and Geeks I guess is what we should be aiming for. I think a school life sitcom shot more like The Office and less like The OC would be really appealing.

Sadly producers can't grasp the fact that NO KIDS EVER IN THE WORLD are like the one off Skins - the most poorly written program ever made.

It's the law to portray teen on telly as drug taking, wanking, poncy, confident, shagging machines. When no teen is like that.

I think you'll like The Inbetweeners because it definitely isn't the above. The first couple of episodes feature them trying to get a drink in a pub (and failing), being bullied at school, being told off by their parents etc etc.

Skins it definitely is not... there's no drugs and glamour, and none of them have sex (although one of them funnily tries to tell everyone he has) - as one of the clips on the E4 site shows, the most glam it gets is when one of them pukes up after drinking for the first time.

That said, yes, it is primarily aimed at a Skins aged audience. Older audiences can still no doubt get something from it though - for me it's Alex MacQueen playing a closet-gay dad.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Martin Holmes said:

It just seems really uninspired, puking and wank gags. It's kind of like taking that school immaturity, which yes needs to be represented in a school sitcom, but it is using that as it's main joke, so instead of combining that with characters that are actually funny and can comment on the 'childishness' going on around them, they just have everyone acting like a 13 year old, with jokes written for 13 year olds.

I mean, the disabled kid unintenionally getting hurt! What next? Somone bad mouthing a teacher who turns out to be stood behind them..Oops!

To me it just seems lazy and uninspired. But yeah judge it on it's merits and all that. :)

I've just spent the last few weeks watching all of the Freaks & Geeks boxset which is probably why I don't find this show funny or original. For example I remember teachers making you write lines, but I don't remember somebody puking into the face of a mate's little sister. :)

Isn't the sole point of the trailers to reflect the type of show it is? Moreover, they often put the best bits of the show into the trailer, to hook viewers in. So it's actually perfectly acceptable to reach a vague conclusion about something on the basis of these ninety second promos.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Aaron said:

Yes, I agree. But some of the opinions being expressed were far more than "vague conclusions". However, if Martin says that it's already been leaked - and thus implying that he's seen the whole of the first episode - then his comments are fair. Mark's seen the first few as well, so anything he says is also fair. Other people I can't speak for.

Just watched the trailers.

Why have they cast a 25 year old as someone who goes to school?

I have to say, certain bits seemed okay (not all that funny, but at least it wasn't given that horrible e4 "aren't we quirky and down wiv da kidz" type feel to it) so I may take a look. Though the fact they've done an American style 'lets cast people 10 years older than the parts they're playing is a bit off putting'.

Written by Ian Morris and Damon Beesley (who had characters in Extras named after them, of course) Morris scripted edited Peep Show.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Martin Holmes said:

Yeah the kids are too old, it's alright if you can get someone in their 20's that look 16/17 but a couple of those guys look much older than the age they're playing. Kind of like The OC I guess.

That's why Freaks and Geeks is so great because most of the actors were the same age of the characters, or a couple of years off. I think Martin Starr and Samm Levine were 16 playing 14 year olds but they could easily pass off as 14 and John Daley was actually 14 the same age as his character. I don't mean to keep harping on about Freaks and Geeks but it's definitely worth checking out for a different, original, realistic and funny school life sitcom.

Sometimes you have to go on reviews if there is a clash over things to watch. I was aware that it being an E4 program it would bound to be on again at some point as well.

Besides, the reviews I saw were so negative you had to take some sort of notice of them.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, chipolata said:

In reality, I'm more than half. I just have no interest in them. They're all a load of bollocks IMO. It's interesting that people object to laughter tracks because they don't like "being told when to laugh", but actively seek out people telling them what to fucking watch in the first place.

Well, really! I mean I'm glad the nurses have let you have your laptop back, but that's just abusive.

Unless it's part of your therapy, in which case I give you free rein to look up swears in the dictionary and fling them at me.

Here's hoping you're back on that trading floor in no time. There's no stigma these days. One of the doctors on Casualty went loony and she's back at work already.

Eh? What? I posted yesterday (May 8) that I had the second episode waiting for me. I watched it last night (May 8 again). Then I watched the third episode at the time of transmission (still May 8).

Today (May 9) I posted that I did not think that last night's episode was as good as the first. Then I posted that I had watched a video recording of the second episode.

Now, I wish I hadn't heard of this programme. I've been accused of sitcom-watching inaccuracy by Aaron and rogered in the mush by a commodities trader, AND I've insulted Ellie by calling her "quite fit". Quite fit? I wish someone would call me quite fit.

I hate The Inbetweeners now.

It seemed true to life in a way, the 4 actors are brilliant, especially the geeky one. Very good comedic use of swearing, too

Skins is painfully unrealistic - no teens are like that. Ever.

The Inbetweeners is like looking in a mirror in many ways. The middle-class lack of confidence, the obvious intelligence of some young people, they way they never win etc.

I caught The Inbetweeners by accident after watching The Big Bang Theory last week and it is a very funny sitcom and is a more accurate potrayal of teenagers than Skins which I enjoyed as well. Certainly most of the traits of the characters were similar if not identical to people I knew at school.

If Channel 4 have sense, they should move it to a Friday Night slot in the summer or autumn.

Have had ideas for a while now of a school sitcom, will maybe get working on it soon now that my exams are over.

I suppose the middle-class school may be where I find it hard to relate though, having gone to a working class comprehensive. But also it could be because The Inbetweeners doesn't actually focus on the school that much anyway, like the hierarchy's within schools, the little cliques and all that type of stuff, it is much more broad and 'sitcomy'...getting felt up by driving instructors, getting stuck in between funeral cars, projectile vomiting over a little girl...none of that I feel is relatable. Not saying that those a necesserily a bad thing, I laughed at the funeral car bit and it works if that's the show they are aiming to make. But that's why I feel that there is still room for a more realistic school life sitcom, I suppose more like Teachers but from the kids perspective (although Teachers did have many surreal moments too), I'm thinking something filmed more in style of The Office or perhaps The Thick of It but set in a school (not a mockumentary though).

That was a good episode, but I have some bones to pick; the punk girl character seemed very unrealistic, so did Will's reaction, which stuck out as the rest of the show is so believable, also the stupid friend is seeming a little 2dimensional at the moment, all he is is stupid, at least it seems that way to me. The rest of it was good - It was interesting seeing another, more vulnerable side to Jay's character.

Great interview too, I hope there is a second series.

agree with the above - stupid friend is lucky that his 3rd dimension is funny dancing which is always a useful substitute - and the whole punk girl/will skidding thing was a bit weak. Other than that, very good. (although "an unholy amount of spunk" was nicked from Extras and tweaked)

View original

Definitely not as clear cut as in American schools, but cliques definitely exist and branch out more too, which makes it much more interesting. You have the popular kids that are made up of a mix of people who are really good at sport, people who are genuinely cool and then just brainless idiots that are popular due to putting fear into people. Then you have the middle, average group where some can split off into the popular group from time to time and also the geek group. Then you have the full on geek group. Then you have the complete losers, that don't turn up that often.

Right, I watched episode 6 this morning. Have to say, it's not the best. Certainly the lightest on laughs. But still very realistic, very funny in places, and entertaining. Ties things up nicely, with enough room for a second series. Pity that the show went downhill a bit (from a peak of episode 3, probably), but still probably the best new series so far this year.

And I won't spoil it for anyone by going further. :)

One of the funniest things that I have ever seen in my entire life and easily the best thing that E4 that has ever produced. I must admit, I have a fairly low opinion of E4 (as well as Channel 4) but this has definitely earned it some browny points.

The dialogue is wonderful. All the idiotic conversations, taking the piss out of each other, obsessing over girls who probably wouldn't give you the time of day. It's all so perfect. Basically, it's the most accurate depiction of what it's like to be a 17 year old boy that you're ever likely to see on television. I had three really goods friends that I hung around with in school most of the time so I can definitely relate to it.

Because I'm a geek who sits near his PC, I'll give some closing thoughts.

Brilliant. Surprise hit of the year.

All four characters come across brilliantly, despite the being 'lived' through Will, they all had stand out moments. Jay's delivery is quite superb and he never fails to raise a laugh. He's such a realistic character and every line is spot on.

The way Jay (who started off as 2D) gradually got fleshed out and you could sympathise with him, was real well executed.

The use of Simon as the 'everyman' character - a la Tim from The Office was a masterstroke, and the juxtaposition of Neil being a dummy with the fact he gets the most action than anyone was a nice move on the writer's part.

I'm not totally sure about Will and the blonde bird mind, that's slightly out of the realism realms but other than that it's been fantastic.

Oh, that was a lovely ending. 'Cause I want to be a director, I really loved the last shots of them all laying around one the trampoline, with their large shadows.

I grew to like Jay more, his moments with the guy who kept eating the burgers showed a different side to him, which we all needed to see. His delivery of the line "I didn't have no fucking chips," was brilliant, and I'm glad Simon never told Carly his feelings, just yet anyway.

I also liked the bit where Mark threatened Will, and everyone turned on him, so to speak. Then as Will was about to make his peech they all turned away. Hopefully, I'll add more to this.

"A bit too jazzy?"
"That sounds a little rapey."

The way the 6th form head is a complete wanker is about right.

And the house parties - but pulling the "Hottest" girl at them isn't, they always havea boyfriend who doesn't go to the school and is a raging drug addict of some sort.

I go to an all boys school, so the hottest girl at our school is at least 25 and a teacher...

But the story line involving Will getting together with a hot girl is quite ridiculous, probably quite far from any geek's 'real life.' But otherwise the show is a more accurate representation of Sixth Form life than anything else.

We're not that stupid though, are we?

I don't know how to explain it.

It might be the fact he's got quite a high voice too, that, in my mind, equates it with 70s Grange Hill.

Also you never get Cockney accents that thick anymore on telly. Even EastEnders have toned it down.

Agree with Seefacts about Simon being the 'Tim' character, although it seemed to go further than that: he *was* Martin Freeman in his expressions, reactions and (especially) banter and put-downs.

The 'witty repartee' between Will and the blonde one was excellent.

I think that might be the point, after Skins cut itself short because all of it's characters left for college E4 are probably a bit more wary about making school based shows. This way they have scope for up to five additional series, though I doubt they'll make that many.
