TILT - now broadcasting

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Mark said:

OK, just to remind everyone: Tilt, the topical sketch show that will be accepting unsolicited material, starts tonight. It is on BBC7 at 11:30pm. You can listen to Radio 7 on the internet via this link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/bbc7.shtml

Once you've heard the style of the show it is then time to send off your sketches, tweaking them to match the style of the show first.

Here's a reminder of what they're looking for and where to send the sketches:
http://www.sitcom.co.uk/writers/write_for_tilt.shtml

And some more in-depth advice from Dave Cohen:
http://www.sitcom.co.uk/writers/writing_sketches.shtml

Dave is now offering a sketch consultation service specifically tailored to maximise your chances of getting something on this show. If you want to raise yourself above the flood of other submissions that are no doubt going to pour into Tilt I'd recommend it. Full details here:
http://www.sitcom.co.uk/writers/consultation_sketch.shtml

If you have any questions post them here, I'm sure Dave will answer them.

Good luck everyone!

p.s. Here are some previous threads discussing Tilt if you want to read into the back story:

Just to update on my scriptreading service, where I offer to read six sketches. If you still want to send me six sketches that's fine, and after going through re-writes etc hopefully we can settle on the three strongest to send. Alternatively if you just want to send me three sketches for £20 then that'll be fine.

Wow a whole skit, most impressed, and if you haven't seen Futurama thats a pretty good skit.

n.b. the one bedratted thing they asked for, 7 word news head lines they didn't use at all. So that means my entries were either wasted, or so bad they decided to dump the whole genre.

From memory the toddler news one was in Play and Record as well (although not the exact same sketch).

My favourite sketch was probably the phone-in host with Tanya from Eastenders, and overall I thought the show itself was alright, some sketches did drag on for a teeny bit too long and didn't go out on a high, but I'd listen again.

I'm confused by the headlines as well, I'm not sure where exactly they were meant to be or what their true style was (my uneducated guess says they may have been the local paper ones at the end).

Griff -- congrats on getting stuff on there. It did get a laugh out of me, for what it's worth. I'm not a massive Futurama nut though (except for the 'Schnoo-schnoo' episode). I'm glad someone from here's got on.

Splodge is correct about the toddler news being used on Play & Record and the Alec Guiness playing 'Michael Hulk' was an extension of a (good) P&R sketch too (though I'm pretty sure it's from a non-commissioned writer as I met him at the original recording and his name was at the end of this).

For what it's worth, I did enjoy it. It sounded better put together than P&R but sounded *very* like Recorded For Training Purposes (pretty sure some of the voices are the same -- maybe that's why!) ie. 'Statebook' (very funny, I thought) would have fitted easily into RFTP.

Yeah, agree that the 'headliners' are a bit confusing. Like sooty's mine were front-page/top item news items. The local bit suggests they want *really* mundane suggestions sent in for the humour, which wasn't really what they asked for, in my opinion.

I did enjoy the show though, contrary to the general opinion on here. It is on *very* late though, especially for someone like me who's getting on a bit...

Actually, as an afterthought (and edit) it's important that BBC7's new stuff is well-received and successful as that will get them to commission new stuff in this vein and new stuff means new writers.

I might even have a stab at it myself so long as they're taking off TV shows and doing space alien bits. That's so long as they'll have me now I've ragged all over their show.

I agree with all this.

I quite enjoyed it and didn't think there was anything wrong with the performances - quite the opposite in fact. Best sketches for me were the news ticker and Eastenders one. The Paul McCartney anagram sketch was clever.

Like is said above, it wasn't as topical as I was expecting though. Perhaps that's just because it was the first week and so they needed to pad it with some pre-prepared stuff?

The one thing that annoyed me was the audience laughter - it didn't seem to have been recorded particularly well and so jarred with the sketches. I understand subsequent weeks will be recorded from the BBC Radio Theatre though so that might improve sound quality (tickets for the recordings still available incidently).

Recognised some of the performers from 'Recorded for Training Purposes'. The news ticker sketch was sooo psychologically astute and funny. Both of my mates and I liked the Tanya Offeastenders sketch and the Curse of Comedy sketch as well. At least that's what we talked about afterwards when we went to the pub next door and listened to free jazz! All very convenient and enjoyable despite the pouring rain outside. "Up the Creek" is a nice venue too with a statue reading the Beano above the doorway! Must listen to the finished Tilt product now!

Hi,

I know what you mean - I did think the Alec Guinness came a bit out of the
blue - but I guess they're counting on the Star Wars franchise and the
actor who did it was excellent - same one as did the Mexican Wave teacher
sketch. The Sir Alec sketch did make me wonder who exactly they see as their target audience though - besides posters on BSG. ;) But hey, if something's funny, it's funny! And for me a lot of the show was.

No, I apologise for the confusion by veering off subject, this was for a radio comedy play a while back. It was just to highlight the strange way of reasoning at the Beeb as to what they deem funny against what actually they broadcast.

I've been to the recording of the first two 'Tilts' and to be honest, the first was a promising start, but last night's was, IMHO, very ordinary. There was just no pace, no light and shade, no atmosphere. Half the time the audience had no idea that the sketch had actually finished and as a result there were often pregnant pauses and then stilted applause, or just plain silence. Maybe 25% of the material got spontaneous and hearty laughs, the rest was received politely or with little or no reaction at times. It was bordering on embarrassing at several times throughout the hour or so that it took to record it.

Indeed, the funniest moment of the night was when one of the players corpsed several times over his lines, reducing the audience to howling laughter. Maybe they should just have done a half hour of those sort of moments, it would have been better. A word of advice for the production team, please, get someone to prompt the crowd next time. It may just improve the whole experience for everyone, as I am sure the personnel involved were just as aware that it wasn't going great at times.

I imagine it varies as to whether you hear beforehand. I noticed on one of the Tilt pages two contributors talk about their sketch being used. Griff says he was emailed on the day, while a woman says she went to the recording and nearly spat her wine out when she heard her sketch used.

I imagine it depends on how much of a dialogue you've had beforehand. I presume Griff that you'd spoken to them a bit and have had previous contact with the beeb. It sounds like you were involved in the development of the sketch, while many will simply send stuff in and cross fingers. That's what I've done.

Perhaps I should take advantage of the BBC global address book, but that seems a bit rude!

I love the last 1. Havent heard the show yet. Here was my input that didnt get anywhere: One Liners:

1. Masked shopkeeper robs customer at gunpoint.

2. Atlantic Ocean arrested for drowning a man.

3. Two women give birth to same baby.

Longer Sketches:

1. Tranquil Sounds CD Advert

Finally, the relaxation you deserve in your very own home with this double cd set. Experience a babbling brook in your kitchen or a summer meadow in your living room, providing a relaxing backdrop to soothing tones. Tranquil Sounds is not available in shops or even by credit card, In fact; you cannot buy it at all. This is just an ad to brag that I have it... and you don't.

END.

2. Main Street Bank Advert

VOICE: Main Street Bank. The bank you can trust. We will not be beaten on mortgages, loans or savings accounts. For all your financial needs, trust Main Street Bank.

TERMS & CONDITIONS VOICE:
Main Street Bank is a subsidary of Town Bank and is in no way affiliated with Village Bank, Suburb Bank or Backdoor Bank. Main Street Bank is a licensed bank. If you do not keep up repayments you may lose you hair. Main Street Bank is a legitimate bank, Main Street Bank is not a legitimate bank, Main Street Bank is not a bank. Terms and Conditions apply.

END.

3. VIRUS REPORT

NEWSCASTER: A new virus appears to be sweeping the nation. The virus results in people only being able to speak half of each sentence. Doctors investigating the illness have christened it 'Only being able to speak half a sentence syndrome' and at least sixty million people are not believed to be affected but there are a few people who are.
We interviewed a man with the illness but we couldn't make any sense of what he was saying. However, the Minister for Viruses held a press conference within the last hour and had this to say:

MINISTER: (Sounds under pressure) I would just like to clarify right here and now that there is absolutely no need for panic. While I admit the virus did spread a lot quicker than we had first anticipated we have now contained the virus. All the people affected with the virus have now been quarantined and are receiving....

Latest results suggest we are not...... Recent tests have found what we....... So with these results we know we are...... Thank.......

END.

I agree. the original steer was to imagine headlines between the news at ten bongs, so what did we get? The under two's and the bleeding wombles! Thankfully the wombles didn't resurface week two, but the under two's did. It's just so childish, quite literally. Week one was a good show overall because for the few odd weak bits there was also some very good material. The lawyers phone in, the statebook ad, etc. This week, no advertisements at all, just revisiting Terminal 5 every few minutes and a bunch of other stuff that was for the most part, unmemorable, lacking both in pace and dynamics, and, most of all, humour. The atmosphere at the recording was very flat too and I am sure the performers knew it.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, swerytd said:

I'm guessing the week one recording contained a few bits from the 'taster' session a few weeks ago in addition to the recording, whereas the recording you saw was the whole show in a single recording. On first listen I thought it was weaker this week and can see what they're trying to do with the 'running' gag; it adds a bit of structure/familiarity to the show. But that doesn't necessarily make it funnier. For what it's worth, headliners at the very beginning and the ad-breaks would break it up a bit and make it enjoyable. Short sketches and quickies mixture would make it easier to enjoy. Long sketch followed by long sketch is quite difficult to get into and that's what I felt it was like. I will listen again to it later to see if I'm being unjust but most people probably wouldn't give it that chance.

You need to step back for a moment and look at this show in context.

‘Tilt’ is the first topical comedy show accepting work from new and non-commissioned writers in years. ‘Week Ending’, which used to run for 40 weeks a year on Radio 4, was scrapped in the late 90s, and ‘Parsons & Naylor’, which was largely written by the cast, was dropped by Radio 2 about three years ago. The Writers’ Guild has been hassling BBC Radio for years to bring back shows that use new writers, and BBC Radio have responded so well done BBC Radio.

This show is not aimed at us comedy anoraks, except in the sense that if you want to become a professional comedy writer then you should be trying to get stuff on it. The vast majority of people who listen to radio comedy hear it differently to us. Some will be pleased to hear a comedy show that refers to stuff they actually read about this week. Others will have it on in the background and come away happy if they laughed out loud three times – and I bet loads of people will say ‘I really love that news for two year olds.’

As Dan pointed out, show one was several weeks in preparation. Show 2 had one week, and there are now just four days to go before the deadline for show 3. All the writers are either very new or relatively new. It’s one thing to be a genius in your bedroom, as we have all been at some stage in our heads, but then you get a commission, and suddenly you have to produce stuff every day, which you then have to re-write and re-write – only for the actors to perform it on the night and it not get a laugh. That’s part of the learning curve. And thank God we still have, just, the BBC, who make ‘Tilt’ not because they expect it to be the next ‘Little Britain’, or because they are contractually required to make topical comedy shows, but because they’re prepared to spend money on training writers, and comic actors and producers for the future.

Instead of saying ‘why do I bother sending stuff when they put that rubbish on’ you need to say ‘this is what the show sounds like, how do I make the three sketches that I send jump off the page when the producer reads them?’

Okay, rant over. Now get writing!

You're absolutely right of course, however I think it's good if people think their stuff is better than the output, even if they might be delusional! In any sort of writing industry, you have to be thick skinned and have confidence; if you believe your stuff is inferior then you won't bother to send it and so are defeated at step one.

I think having that arrogance to say 'I'm better than that, I can write something to blow them away' is essential. That said, it shouldn't descend into openly criticising other writers.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Aldeem said:

Hi Dave, and thanks for your rant. Fair play, however, parsons & Naylor only finished last year. I went to many of those shows had stuff performed on it, andat the very least I think there are lessons to be learnt, if only in terms of the performers prompting the audience at sketch end in order to avoid the very many pregnant pauses and sometimes total silence that followed a few of the sketches on Wednesday. After week one, what I gleaned was that it was pretty fast pace, and a blend of ads, sketches, news items and trailers. The statebook ad, the lawyers phone in, the parkinson interview, to name but three, were all very good. This week however, it was a much different pace, the atmosphere was flat, the material very hit and miss and the topics in places, lame. Me and a friend walked out of there agreeing that it was the worst recording we had been to in many a year. Gone were the quickfire, fast delivery spoof ads and nowhere to be seen (again) were the one liners they asked for in the original brief (instead we had the under two's news again and a couple of 11 second news items). Some of the one liners posted on here are very funny. Certainly funnier than a loot of the stuff that made the show. To be honest, I was baffled and bemused by the show this week. A total contrast to last week's success. I genuinely feel that I, and others on here are justified in feeling a bit frustrated if that's set the bar for the rest of the series.

Surely it's possible to do both? Have a rant and try to write brilliant sketches that stand a chance of getting used? Surely one of the reasons for a forum like this is that we can all blow off a bit of steam every now and then?

Indeed. Like I did just then.

I agree there's some top stuff on this forum. And, as we've seen, BSG writers who have managed to get their sketches broadcast on these new non-commissioned shows. But there's maybe one or two people at the Beeb sifting through hundreds of submissions that will make up maybe five minutes of the whole show. The producer has to rely on the commissioned writers to provide the backbone otherwise she'd get to noon on Tuesday and have precisely no minutes to record the next day. Give those new writers, who are only marginally more experienced than you, time to work out how to get it right.

Next series, if you plug away, that could be you. It's not about being arrogant enough to think you can write better stuff, as believing you have the ability to contribute.

I honestly don't think people are, we ALL know comedy is subjective and I like the majority of stuff but found this weeks very flat... the sausage sketch went on to long by far. Well I've often said comedy isn't about being the funniest, seriously it isn't it's about meeting the needs of the show. You may have the funniest necrophilia pet joke, it won't get on Blue Peter.

I think from listening to Tilt what they are looking from us non-coms
is
1 Silly jokes, 2 None topical, 3 Fairly inoffensive (I didn't hear any swearing I remember, and Mosley was the only sex gag), 4 Quite quick 1-2 minutes of material, 5 Actually reminded me of Crackerjack.
6 Colorful bordering on the surreal.

As such this weekend I'm going to write 6 skits on critique that roughly fit these guide lines, and would really appreciate feedback. I'd reccomend other aspirant skit writers do the same.

Oh definitely. I don't think spoof news shows can ever be made again really, because it was perfected so well by Iannucci, Morris et al. I mean look at Broken News, how that even managed to get on TV I'll never be quite sure, it was a blatant rip off of The Day Today, even down to the sketch about a person been pierced by frozen urine (it may have just been frozen water in Broken News but it was basically the same thing).

Not a bad episode. I find myself asking the question, how much of this was written in the last week? Most of this would seem to be a collection of the shows main writers skits that may have been written some time this year.

They have commissioned writers, none commissioned who write in advance (a month or so), and commissioned writers who were also writing in advance. So I would guess they're only looking for about half a dozen skits a week.

I mean it makes sense, the closing submission date is Tuesday afternoon, the play date is Thursday afternoon

Probably leaves only a day, and a half to rehearse new stuff.

I love NR, but look at how rough there stuff is with 2-3 days of rehersal.

It's recorded on a Wednesdays to give them time to edit, so there's even less time to rehearse then that (Although they'd perform with script in hand making it a lot easier then a live show)

It would be intresting to see a breakdown of what was actually non-commissioned; there's quite a few elements that I'm guessing are mostly advanced writers stuff. (I still don't feel the headlines/spoof news part has really materialized anywhere.)

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, sootyj said:

You're right it's only a day.

I'm not sure having the scripts, makes to much diference to the actual performing.

I think a lot of these shows start with good intentions, but pretty soon the shear logistics of trying to sift through all the non-commissioned material becomes too much and they fall back on a small pool of writers known to them.

Well, having the script means you don't have to completely learn it which I'd guess means you can focus a bit more on the performing. (But I'm no actor so maybe it's not that big an advantage)

Yeah, I can't imagine the 'fun' of having to sort through all the submitted material... Plus encouraging new talent is probably a back seat to entertaining the listener.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Sofa_Matt said:

Aren't all the listeners just frustrated writers who didn't get an email to confirm that their submission made it, so instead listen to the show with a view to either tear it apart or hope that they missed the email and thneir skit made it after all!

Interesting, Victoria Lloyd (the producer) has been posting on the BBC7 Comedy Messageboard here:

She mentions that the 'Headliner' gags are apparantly being scrolled on-screen if you listen on a digital radio (that has a display) or on the television if you're listening (watching?) that way, which kind of makes sense as to why we don't here anything.

Also, she makes reference to Play & Record returning for a second series. That, I think, is good news for all us non-commissioned bods if both that and Tilt are yearly 'open-door' policy shows.

I got in too, but I'm not in a position to hear the show tonight. I'll wait until I've listened to it online and heard the audience reaction before I own up to which is mine...

Congrats everyone that got in!

TBH you'll probably guess mine. Aaron should like it -- that's the only clue you're getting.

Hehe :) They edited the shit out of it though. (Not that I'm complaining!)

*Lot* of writers yesterday in the credits (must have lasted about five minutes!).

Biggest laugh from me yesterday was the Indiana Jones quickie. Did someone here write that?

One of mine was on last night - heavily edited from sketch to one-liners, but still happy.

Mine was

... and next on BBC2, Delia Smith's how to cheat at A-Levels

which I hope raised a chuckle

As it's the first time I've had anything accepted by the BBC after trying a few other shows, I'm pleased.

Just listened again to the show online. I have only heard this show and the previous two, but I believe it has improved each time.

That said, my opinion may have been tempered by the fact that I was waiting for my sketch to air.

It was the Dutch Ambassador conversation for info (and was also edited as per others' experience).

Not yet. Victoria Lloyd posted somewhere that Play & Record is back for a second series later in the year so (hopefully!) it looks like that and Tilt may be the 'ongoing' open submissions programmes for the forseeable future.

They can stick us cheaply on BBC7 now and spend their 'new talent' money there!

Wasn't there a vague "technology/communication" brief for P&R, not as strict as that for Recorded For Training Purposes, but still a sort of underlying suggestion ? Then again I can barely remember what I had for breakfast today so the odds of me remembering this detail with any accuracy are small.

Does anyone know what the legal implications are of recording a sketch you wrote for Tilt? For posterity reasons.

And also how one might go about actually making such a recording?

Firstly belated congrats to everyone who scored in Tilt last night (and indeed so far). I also know a couple of writers not of this parish who scored last night, Tilt are certainly clocking up the numbers of non-commissioned writers.

As far as taping Tilt goes, on my Mac I use an application called WireTap which can save streaming audio into MP3 files. I'm sure there will be Windows equivalents. I'm not a lawyer, but I shouldn't think anyone at the BBC would have any problem with people doing this for personal use, it's selling these recordings or sharing them over the Internet that will get you into trouble.

I use a free thing called Audacity.
If you google for it you'll probably find it for download.

Just a note to let you know that the other day I had a quick chat with the Broadcast Assistant who works on Tilt, and she said they were really impressed with the stuff that came in from the non-commissioned writers, loads of good stuff, tons more than they were expecting to use. So congratulations to everyone here who got stuff on. You've now joined the likes of Andy Hamilton, David Renwick, Jeremy Hardy, Ade Edmondson, Guy Jenkin and dozens more whose first professional writing income came from a topical comedy sketch broadcast on the BBC. Really glad your persistence has paid off.

Just a big thanks to Dave Cohen on behalf of everyone (said the self-appointed spokesman!); it's great to get feedback from 'within'. I think that's the hardest thing for non-commissioned writers as we never find out what's right or wrong with stuff. Some positive feedback coming out is very encouraging for us all.

Right, emailed some sketches off tonight and a couple of quickies are looking good for this week at present, so fingers crossed.

I thanked the team for giving us this opportunity -- again, self-appointed spokesperson for comedy sketch-writers everywhere (good and bad branch) -- and the producer was kind enough to get back to me to say that:
'the hope is that Tilt will eventually have two 13-week long runs a year and act as a breeding ground for other shows... but that depends on the funding... so write in to BBC7 and tell them what a great show it is.'

Good point to noted here, is that if they get enough good feedback about it maybe it'll be a shoo-in for another (and many more) series. As up-and-coming (or down-and-going) writers I think we need this sort of thing, and it's a chance for us to 'make our own luck'. So if you get a chance after this last episode is broadcast, it may be worth finding five or ten minutes to send in an email praising the show (and praising BBC7's commitment to new writing talent probably wouldn't go amiss either!)

It has got better since the first couple of episodes after finding its feet (a fact she did acknowledge) as can be seen not only from the improving reaction on this thread but also some people are being won over on the BBC7 Comedy Discussion Board, which has won 'Most Cynical Place in Cyberspace' Awards for three years running...

Play & Record (my own personal broadcast-writing debut last year) is definitely back later in the year. I'm assuming this will be done similarly to last year's scheme for open submissions.

Good news all round I think.

I had a massive, massive interview this week so I displayed Berbatov-esque laziness and lack of effort towards pretty much everything else, but congratulations to all those who got something on.

I think overall it's been a decent series and hopefully it will come back for another one.
