Full details will appear here in about 5 minutes time. Keep refreshing.

To re-cap: Tilt is a new radio sketch show that will be taking un-solicited material. i.e. at last, a new avenue into BBC comedy writing.

Full details are on the below page, with some tips from Dave Cohen:
http://www.sitcom.co.uk/writers/write_for_tilt.shtml

If you have any questions post them in this thread and I'll see if I can get Dave to answer them too.

Look forward to hearing some of your material on the radio!

"Don't start sending stuff until the 21st March"

Isn't that what it says?

Don't thank me, Dave Cohen is the one to thank. His advice there is top notch so do follow that...

Particularly the bit about going to see the first recording I'd say. As has been demonstrated in the Newsrevue / Treason Show threads, getting as much knowledge about a show in advance of submitting something is important. If you can style your submissions to the performers' particular talents and the general style of the show you may have a chance of getting something accepted.

I suspect many will completely miss the target. It can't just be funny, it has to be funny and relivant to the show!

These opportunities don't come along often enough; competition is therefore likely to be very tough. Doing things like watching the recording and careful tailoring of gags is the way to get an unfair advantage over your fellow writers!

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, ContainsNuts said:

Well done Mark for putting this up and for Dave for the advice. Its a great opportunity indeed and there certainly aren't that many with the Beeb at the moment.

Just one query about the recordings, won't the show be broadcast soon after each one? For those that aren't nearby, they hopefully won't lose too much if they listen to the show once its out.

I can see it being essential to go to NR and TS as they aren't broadcast and their visual shows.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Anorak said:

Yes the shows will be going out the next day, I think, and will be available on 'Listen Again' for a whole week. So after show 1 there'll be no excuse for sending stuff that doesn't fit the format. Also I can't remember if I mentioned that they're only looking for topical stuff from most non-commissioned writers, so don't waste too much energy or effort at this stage trying to come up with formats.

Dave Cohen, being the really nice guy he is, has now very kindly also written a more in-depth guide on how to write a good sketch for Tilt. I'd suggest this article is required reading for anyone who wants to succeed with this opportunity...

http://www.sitcom.co.uk/writers/writing_sketches.shtml

If you have any questions do post them here as Dave will be logging on later to answer some of them.

Thanks Mark/Dave -- the article is very helpful.

Griff

The 'invited non-commissioned writers' were those of us lucky enough to get a sketch on Play & Record (and, I assume one or two other open-submission shows) that the producer was involved in last year. I don't think it refers to ability as such!

Hope this helps.

Dan

Great stuff from Dave. I've just been reading Aristole's Poetics actually so it sunk in nicely.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Anorak said:

Yes I think Dan has it summed up. The commissioned writers are still putting the show together, Victoria is also taking input from non-commissioned writers who impressed her last time - then from 21st March its every writer for him and herself. I'll let you know of any further developments.

Just wondering about the submissions format, should we be sending 1 e-mail with several sketches attached or an individual e-mail per sketch?

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Anorak said:

I guess one e-mail with everything in it. They'll be getting a lot of stuff.

Next week Dave Cohen will launching a new sketch reading service via this website. To find out more see this link:
http://www.sitcom.co.uk/writers/consultation_sketch.shtml

Full details next week. If you're looking to succeed with Tilt I'd suggest this is certainly something to consider!

As an aside, I'd suggest everyone should be putting all their effort into getting some material onto this show. It is exactly this sort of show that could get the BBC to 'notice' you.

Earlier today I interviewed a well-known comedy writer for a feature that will hopefully be approved to appear on this site soon. Six years ago, this person was in the same position as many on you - but their career got a jump-start after a couple of carefully honed sketches they had sent in attracted the attention of a BBC producer. Tilt is the next opportunity to try this route in.
