Love Soup Series 2

Love Soup Series 2 starts next Saturday BBC1 (1st March).

Now in 30 min format.

I think this was filmed ages ago, any idea why it's taken so long for it to be broadcast?

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Matthew Stott said:

Maybe because its changed so much, half the running time and the other lead character, the American bloke, is no longer in it, theyve given it some distance from series one so people might come to it as its own thing, like its an entirely new show?

Don't think so, unless it's been on BBC4 (not 100% sure)

Something to look forward to

Was it longer before? I don't remember - but it should still be good if still written by whatisname.

Yes. Apparently there were 12 hour-long episodes in series one. So that's a whole American 'season', if you have the cheek to class it as a 'sitcom'.

No, there were only 6 hourlong episodes in Series 1. Series 2 is cutting the format in half, thus making 12 30-minute episodes.

No, no, no! She is so gawky and toothy and wet with that horrible voice! Shes just about bearable in Ashes To Ashes, but I used to hate that credit card ad she was in. Missed this tonight; I watched the first series and had meant to watch this, but only just remembered when I saw this thread a moment ago. Bugger.

Just me that thought it was pretty poor then? I really liked the first series when it was first shown but caught some repeats last year and didn't think it was as good as I remembered it. And last nights episode really disappointed.

I really like Tamsin, couldn't see why she'd agreed to do it, but Sheridan, in my view, is really quite bad.

I thought the plot, for want of a better word, was disjointed and contrived and was not engaged by it at all. Unfortunately, as I was looking forward to it.

The best thing about it in fact, was that because I watched it I was still awake at 9.30 and caught the first 3 episodes of Gavin and Stacey, which was just as funny second time around.

Now that the American bloke has left, it's obviously a different show. It's no longer about two people who are perfect for each other who never meet. Now it's just about Alice and I wasn't sure if the show would work that way. Whatever Alice went through in the first series, Gil went through something similar and I enjoyed that. But, I was pleasantly surprised by Saturday's episode and now have no worries about how the show will work without Gil. Look forward to the nest episode.

I'm still pretty unconvinced. And being of the girlie persuasion, I'm missing the male element of the show that Gil provided. There was so much mileage in his storyline, I really don't understand why they've ditched it!
I feel that the premise of the show has been compromised. There were funny moments in the first episode of the second series, and I like the characters, but I found myself waiting for Gil to appear, and then it ended.
I'm unfulfilled.

Well, I thought it was jolly good. In lesser hands than Renwick's, the bedroom performance review subplot would all have been a hilarious misunderstanding. And the gentle/mental confusion was genius.

Renwick is the best British writer of farce. I appreciate that for many people that's like saying Marcel Marceau was the best mime in the world, or that lethal injection is the best form of execution, but I don't think you can beat a properly executed farce for laughs. And I don't mean Whoops, Vicar, I Appear To Be Wearing Your Wife's Knickers by Ray Cooney, I mean Frasier and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I thought the timing was excellent, as it really came out of the blue.

I almost wouldn't have been surprised to see this kind of ending at the end of the first episode of this series -- or maybe even the last -- as a way of making a tidy wrap-up nod to Series 1. But to slip it into the end of the third episode really caught me off guard and increased the impact. Well done.

Yeah, the definite implication of the phonecall scene was that he'd died. True that without it being explicitly said we wouldn't have been able to be totally 100% sure, but I don't think that there was any reasonable alternative conclusion which we could have come to.

Hello guys, I've been stalking these boards for years but never actually joined...until now.

I'm a huge sitcom nut; in fact I adore comedy in general and am very passionate about it. I did a little writing before I went to university and entered the BBC's ‘Last Laugh’ competition, although I didn't get very far.

I prefer 'studio-based' sitcoms with an audience and am concerned about how few quality sitcoms are studio-based these days, ‘Not Going Out’ and ‘IT Crowd’ excluded.

Anyway I adore David Renwick's writing, just hearing the title theme from Jonathan Creek makes me quiver in a quite unhealthy manner. I was a little disappointed with Love Soup series one, but soon discovered the beauty is in the subtlety of the writing along with the strong performances. Series 2 runs far smoother and although some of the fun has been lost, the show has gained coherence necessary for a sitcom to thrive.

This is one of those programs that no one I know watches, and no doubt it will be forgotten like so many great sitcoms, only remembered by the small minority like us - as far as I'm concerned, that makes us the lucky ones!

There is a neewspaper column that mentions Love Soup, or rather a pointless right-wing rant from Peter Hitchens in the Daily Mail (see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/columnists/mailonsunday.html?in_article_id=559223&in_page_id=1791&in_author_id=224) entitled, "The week they sowed the seeds of a British secret police" that mentions Love Soup.

Quote:

* TV executives tell me that no mainstream channel can now show old episodes of The Sweeney because they are considered too violent. Interesting how tastes change.

Last week the BBC's supposedly gentle, quirky comedy Love Soup showed a suicide in which a woman's body thudded into the pavement and oozed blood and, shortly afterwards, a scene in which a dog has sex with a woman.

When did the taboos against such things dissolve, exactly?

How come this seriously strange programme has one of the most enviable slots on licence-funded terrestrial TV?

Still, at least we know that the central character, played by Tamsin Greig, is an OK person because she is shown reading The Guardian on her day off from her job as boss of a cosmetics counter.

What a cunt.

Rant? Yes. Cunt? Pointless? Right-wing? Not at all. Well, not from that article anyway. Tastes change. Taboos change. And if he's right about The Sweeney, then there's another example of TV's barmy hypocrisy. It's an entirely valid - and correct - point.

You certainly expect different content, approach, subject-matter and levels of taste/acceptability when you watch comedy. I know it has been debated on the forums of what comedy constitutes. The range is vast.

David Renwick frequently seems to want to jolt the viewer out of complacency I think. I am not sure of course exactly what his motivation is and always watch, being aware that anything can happen. Overall I think this tension makes his programmes more compelling but at times I wonder if it is simply shock value. In One Foot in the Grave the wife of Angus Deayton was caught drink driving (I hope I got that right) and it was quite a jolt. The view of the suicide itself didn't add to the story in any way. The dog scene I just found a bit silly, thought it was quite funny. I think in a less well thought of comedy the same scene could be seen differently. The part in that episode that I found dark and disturbing was when she found out what her latest man did for a living.

Agreed David, it's a terrific show. There are a number of truly excellent comic ideas in every episode, David Renwick obviously puts a lot of thought into his scripts and it shows.

Just got the Series 2 DVD. Quick review if anyone's interested: 2 discs, six episodes apiece. Two main featurettes of approx. 16m duration, one looking at the editing of an episode and one looking at location shooting (both interesting). 10m or so of deleted scenes and a 6m outtakes reel. The packaging also mentions something called 'Making a Nightmare', which I assume to be a look at the making of the ventriloquist's dummy sequence in Episode 3 -- but I couldn't find this!

BTW I did look ahead, but wouldn't dream of spoiling it for anyone ;)

You should become a DVD designer Anna - I'm very impressed with your covers - they're often much better than the real things.

Agreed!

Not only because on the real one, I believe Tamsin is all small, right at the back?
