I append the main body of an email I received today, as it may be useful for the completely uninitiated.
Having received that, I have no idea when the deadline is for submissions, what's in, what's not, etc. Very puzzling.

**
On the subject of submissions this is something that all our writers need to know.
At the moment, I direct, script-edit the show and appear in it (massive stress learning lines right up to the curtain). As well as producing the show and editing the AV I do 5 jobs as our budgets are so tight that we have to multi task. But I have kept an eye on submissions from writers who have recently joined and there is a lot of promise in the material. But here is one thing that must be mentioned. we will not consider material if it doesn't follow the writers guidelines. I know they sound a bit fussy but it is essential that these guidelines are followed as we use a mix of Macs and PC's and view material in body of e-mails and then print from documents. Some writers are sending formats that are not openable (we use WORD or if you don't have that use RTF) or don't put the title of their submission in the subject field. (This means your material can get lost between cast, directors e-mails and office). Also each item must be on a separate e-mail. Otherwise again your material can get missed. And last of all, I am astonished at the number of writers who fail to put their names on their material. This holds up the crediting and payment process for everyone and just pisses everyone off. More importantly can lead to you the writer not being credited or paid.
So please check the guidelines on the website about this if you're not sure as we will not consider your work if these guidelines are not followed, there simply isn't the time.

There is no deadline, as I understand it, but the nearer it gets to the show the less likely you are to get in work that needs lengthy rehearsals. You need to look at the showtimes on the website, particularly the main show at Brighton, to know when it's best to send. I've sent in a topical gag which has gone in that evening. But that's very unlikely to happen with a sketch. I think the best time to send is probably about 2 weeks before the Brighton show.

But they do also hold onto material. The first sketch I had on there I had emailed months before and heard nothing.

They are obviously a bit overwhelmed with material, particularly at the moment by the sound of it.

The mailing list is also a bit hit and miss. I got nothing when I first started submitting, then when I got in I started getting the final running order a few days after the Brighton show. Others get provisional running orders and edit sheets detailing the sort of topics they want covering, but I never seem to have got on that mailing list.

If you get something in, you'll get a running order after the Brighton show and a request for your bank details. If you want to know earlier, best to see the show, which is helpful to see what they like anyway, if you can get there.

Hope this helps.

My most current material won't be considered until the next rehearsals though which start around 25th Feb. I guess that my current sketches will be out of date then, but at least I've found another outlet for my work!

Does anyone have advice for writing topical songs? They've asked for me to submit songs first, sketches second.

My best advice is to get a crystal ball so you can see whats going to be, and remain, topical for a whole month starting from late february.

Songs, I think they just take the lyrics of one song and change them to mean another.

Just to say thanks to Phil for his very nice endorsement and just as a by the by, ever since I've been part of the BSG I've had several people get in touch asking writing parody songs. What I've always said is there are a few rules of thumb that are vital in learning this craft.

1: Never go from memory. Always get the original lyrics and, if you can, the song you want to parody.

2: Always keep to the exact same amount of syllables. It's quite amazing how this doesn't happen because it alters the whole balance of the line and, subsequently, the verse.

By way of example, my take on 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' - 'Shitty Shitty Railways' – http://www.baumskifilks.com/shittyshittyrailways.htm/ is a song which ran over 3 separate runs at News Revue. It's one of my favourites because it took in good satirical points about the appalling state of the railways and also kept to a very difficult rhythm.

As a final thought, it's important to make every line count and to try and make every verse an absolute diamond.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Baumski said:

Quote: Griff @ February 8, 2008, 11:51 AM

Anyway I just wanted to say about your point regarding syllables: it's more complicated than that for a lot of songs.

View original

And that's why it's so vital to listen to the original recording because that's the one that the audience will know. For instance, because of a Viagra story, I took 'Walk Like an Egyptian' by the Bangles and reworked it as 'Walk With an Erection'. Although all verses of this pleasant littl ditty seem to be the same, they aren't. The same goes for 'House of Fun' by Madness and so many others.

While I accept it's not an exact science, but as I say, if you follow the original you're pretty well there because that's what the audience will recognise.

Sorry to piss one every one's chips (including my own)

But it's an audition run (in which I have 10 yay!) If you notice there's a lot of double ups (e.g. 2 on Mugabe), so I reckon about a 3rd is for the chop.

n.b. £20 a skit, £30 a song, £5 a headline, bang on time into your bank (assuming the bank hasn't gone tits up in the credit crunch)

But from a professional point of view 5 is a very good figure (especially if you haven't seen the show), Marks pretty choosy, and specific about what he likes. So it's like a thumbs up from the Del Monte man, even if you don't get in the show proper.

Anychance of seeing your're efforts James?

n.b. there was an eidt sheet yesterday, and you've got a pretty good chance of getting in any of the following in my experience.

1 Headlines (but need to be very snappy)
2 Short skits (e.g. half a page, with a solid badoom tish punchline)
3 Captions (cut and paste the image into a word document, and make sure the tagline is in the message bar), n.b. they fucking love these, do half a dozen the night before and you maybe onto a winner.
4 Any thing that's ultra topical (upto the morning of the show, but obviously keep it short)

But try anything a solid funny skit will still get in even if it's a bit long.

Follow the news as well. If Robert Mugabe gets caught bumming Prince Charles on Saturday lunchtime, they may well want a skit.

Zoooo I really don't know what the politics of this is, so I would err on the side of caution. (I think this is different from the NewsRevue running order in that this is the state of the show in development, so I suspect Mark wouldn't want his updates published on an Internet board. The NR info is the final running order as performed to the public, so really not much of a secret.)

I understand. Maybe the final running order would be okay when it comes out? Not sure how it works.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, sootyj said:

Pleasure I'll tkae it down now, but I'll ask Mark if I can put it back up.

As for Treason, hmmm think robust, solid gags, don't go for to obscure a story, and don't try and be to clever. Always think would this be fun to play ? (e.g. randy royals, shagging gags), avoid anything too nasty (Maddy in NR ok not in TS), and big solid singalong songs (they actually do that).

A well structured gag has always got a good chance.

Character comedy not so much.

n.b. these are pretty standard.

1 Americans are fat, and thick
2 David Cameron is Lelsie Philips
3 George Bush is a bit thick, and talks to a female bodyguard (who he calls son)
4 Gordon Brown is a bit nerdy, and pathetic. He sounds like Darth Vader

The Sun's main story is you can buy beer for 10p a pint in the Sudan.

It's fair to say that The Independant's front covers are rather at odds with most other papers.

The Independent is like getting caught in a tube train full of sociologu students, with tourettes, and flatulence.

Am intrigued Griff, not The Sun, Indy, or Grauniad, are you a Times man? Heaven forfend you're not a Mail reader?

A very classy choice, the Torygraph being so posh, and contemptuos it comes over as surprisingly neutral. They have some top writers too, always like BJs efforts. Funny, but one has the impression the editor got them scrawled on a piece of paper, after threatening 12 strokes of the cane, and no tuck shop.

Hello there.
Does anyone know if the edit sheets for the Treason Show have been mailed out yet? I haven't any for ages. *huh*

Do you mean the running order? Have had that but not with the writers credits yet.

Running order no names, they're getting a bit slack about that.

I got last month's. But not this month's.

Have queried this as I thought I might have something in this month (I did- a Tilt reject, teehee, sssh!). Because they get loads of subs on the same topic and people don't follow the submission guidelines, it becomes harder to match sketch used with writer. April's r/o has loads of unclaimed sketches! Missing writers should identify their work before the full list can go out.

So here's a chance for the greedy and the reckless to steal a spot!

How do we claim them?

Is there a list of titles somewhere? I've sent them some (very) odd stuff although they've probably got taste.
