Improvements

Does anyone have any thoughts on improvements which they think could be made to this 'ere message board? Extra features and/or functionality which you would like to see? Little bits and pieces which would make your life easier...? I do have quite a few changes planned, but I'm sure that there's other things I may not have thought of, and since you lovely lot are the ones who'll be using it, I can't think of anyone better to ask!
(Please note that whilst any and every suggestion will be considered, it may not always be possible, no matter how good an idea it is, to implement.)
Do feel free to PM me if you do not wish to post below, for whatever reason(s).
Thanks!

On other message boards they have that feature where you can click on a person's name and read all their previous posts.
If that was possible that'd be nice.
Can't think of anything else to be honest.

Hi Aaron,
It would be nice to have the number of guests and members online on more if not all pages and not just on the front page (which I tend to skip and go to Active Threads (it’s in my favourites))
So I know if I one of many or just on my lonesome

Aaron, maybe this is featured already but I can't figure it out ... if I'm involved in a forum, can I see if a new comment has been added that I haven't read without going to the main forum page..? Like the 'recent postings' thing on my own page but it could have a 'most recent post' column too maybe..? often i click into them and find no new post. it's not a huge cross to bear, but would be handy i think.

Scott, Aaron can probably answer this better than me but anyway here goes... have you seen the little green icon things on the "active threads" page and within the thread lists? Clicking on them will take you to the last un-read post in each thread.
Alternatively you can get email alerts by ticking the "Subscribe to this Thread" box - appreciate that all the emails might get a bit annoying as a regular poster though.
If the little green icons thing isn't what you had in mind I'm sure we can look to add the functionality somewhere.

Lewis - check out the menu bar at the top of this page. There's a search option available next to the Active Threads link - I think that's what you're after.

Thx Mark. Is this available from my own page, where i go to when i click 'Logged in as Scott T'? that would be cool. What I'm getting at ultimately is - when I've got 10 mins or so - just quickly seeing if there's any update on anything i've been chatting about, so it would be handier to go to my own page to get the summary of what i'm involved in, then a little indicator if there's anything new. i'm probably being really thick, but i can't see any little green things ( i don't mean ANY little green things, i can of course see peas for example).

Ahhh I see - what you decribe is indeed impossible to obtain at the moment but would be useful I agree!
I didn't think anyone used that thread list on their own page! You see I only quickly added it as a space filler until we begin to properly use that page (eventually you'll be able to store wish lists and all kinds of things on there).
I'll see if I can get the green icons to appear there too then. Shouldn't be too difficult I hope.

I don't think I've ever tried to describe anything as ineffectively as that before - maybe that's why my scripts get rejected! Yeah, I use that list on my own page a lot, 'cos if I've been away from my computer all day the threads I'm involved in may have been surpassed by others, so it's a very handy device. The green things (that seems to be the accepted technical term now!) would be very welcome on there if at all possible.

Even I hadn't noticed that list of threads/posts on the 'Logged in as...' page. Haha. Anyway, interesting idea. Will have to consult with Mark about it later on.
Any other ideas, anyone?

For me, that would be downhill.
In fact, I suggest a restriction on one smiley at a time (ie not loads together)!

Right, a few new tags added yesterday, for the purposes of helping Mark and I keep the site running!
First, there's one for DVD covers - [+ai=ASIN]
Then the Amazon and Play 'buy' buttons - [+a=ASIN] and [+p=URL]
(Remove the + for use.)
To find the ASIN of a product, head over to Amazon, and at the bottom of each item's Product Details section, there's an ASIN value, for example ASIN: B000GYHTXQ
So, usage would be:

![]()
(Quote this post to see the code.)
Although it's not mandatory, it'd be much appreciated if people can try and use these tags where possible. Aside from helping us to earn a bit of cash towards the site bills, it's quite flexible and easy to manage from a back-end perspective. (For example if we need to make a drastic overhaul.)
Thanks!

A 'preview post' option would be usefull like most other forums have so when you are inserting BBcode to put images in your posts you can make sure you have done it correctly?
Also the 'edit' feature to be able to edit the last post you made in case you can see an error that you would like to correct such as missing smilies that can make something seem like what it isn't.

I'm afraid to say we're a bit short of space on that top bar (some people have small screens you see). Plus, for clarity, only the 'important' functions appear on the top bar (I'm not sure the outbox could be classified as such). Losaavedra, that top counter is just counting the people who are looking at the forum (board.sitcom.co.uk), not the rest of the site (www.sitcom.co.uk). That gets quite a significant amount of extra visitors.
The explanation as to why there are many more guests than members lurking about is that a lot of people are finding these threads based upon Google searches, getting the info they want and then disappearing. They obviously have nothing they want to add... or they're scared away by the regulars

As for tracking the viewing of individual threads - I'll talk it over with Aaron and see how feasible it is (there's things like database load we need to take into account). I suspect we'll keep some of the data to ourselves however I believe one of the features of the upgraded forum will be the ability to easily see who else is online when you login.
The short answer to what you want to know is that the 'guests' are, from what I can gather, mostly looking at the four forums in the Comedy section (Sitcoms, Other British Comedy, Foreign, DVDs) - I guess to read people's view points. It is also this collection of forums which are well featured on Google - e.g. if you search for 'Not Going Out', that thread on here is ranked high.
The critique forum also gets some focused attention from a particular sub-set of the 'guests'. For example I've spotted a few Channel 4 IP addresses lurking recently.

Thanks Mark, nice concise reply. What sparked this off was, as a 'writer' (using the term rather loosely) and thus being rather a long way down the food chain (!) one gets curious as to who might be viewing one's stuff, in count terms, put up here (member or otherwise) versus which of those who can actually 'comment' as opposed to those who just look desparingly and then go away. OK... guests can't comment but any member could if they have a mind! Applies particularly to Critique ... although also maybe less so to other areas too. However it's not a big deal, there are more important things, and I thank you for your considered response. All the best...

I thought you'd already made that the case?

More seriously >
Can we have links at the bottom of threads, after the last post, back to "Index" and/or "sub-index". saves the time scrolling back up the page if you have no reply to add.
Seems to already be the case for "Add reply".
Ta
-and Can we stop the site doing what it is right now to this post - incorporating it with my previous post if I add anything within, I think it's about, 15 mins. only thing that stops it is if someone else posts meantime.
Seems daft when you want to make two separate comments on a particular subject because you already have the option of editing.

If you hit the 'home' button on your keyboard (this is normally a bit to the right of the backspace, in the group with the delete button) it will whisk you back to the top of the page.
Or you can use the navigation 'crumb' trail in the bottom left (or the drop down in the bottom right). e.g. in this instance you should see a link to 'Help & Feedback' down there.
Quote: thing @ May 6 2008, 2:17 PM BSTCan we stop the site doing what it is right now to this post - incorporating it with my previous post if I add anything within, I think it's about, 15 mins. only thing that stops it is if someone else posts meantime.

The reason for this functionality is for people who want to multiple-quote in a single post like I'm doing here (saves lots of fiddly copying, pasting and editing quote tags). Plus in theory, if you are posting within that 15 minute window it normally actually is someone adding an edit (again, saves lots of fiddily editing).
I suggest the way around this one is to use, like I have, quotes from the different posts you're responding to as a break between the posts.
Hope this helps.

Curious italics?
Erm, dunno now! I just recall quite a few instances where I wanted to reply to various points individually to avoid confusion and where there was no real reason to quote. I think I noticed it most during the quiz where obviously it would have helped me to separate the asking of questions from acknowledgement of answers.
No big deal though, it was just a suggestion cos I'd never experienced it on other forums. I do also recall our pm exchange about multiple quoting -which your current system does partly facilitate in this way.
On the bottom buttons issue, I did understand some of what Mark said - but not all. I still just find it easier when you have a single click facility from your current view.
Ta
Also I know some people debated the 'who's online' issue and you seemed against it.
No great issue for me but again would have been very useful during the quiz or especially when launching a session (I did actually repeatedly jump all over the thread to find out who might be around to join in - not easy over so many pages.

What about ropes? Ropes are ok right?
The edit button does indeed serve the purpose quite well, but I can also why some people would want a 'preview' option... in fast moving threads it saves making a formatting disaster and if you're posting up a script you can check it all looks good before people pounce on it etc.
