Doctor Who...

Hats off to Russell T. Davies for completely re-energising this franchise and turning it into one of the Beebs biggest shows in years. But am I alone in getting a bit sick of the endless "Aliens Invading London" storylines? It seems to me he's pissing away a great conceit, and turning Dr Who into an increasingly predictable show. I'm also slightly concerned that the best and most memorable monsters of the new show, are ones created thirty or forty years ago.

I really enjoyed Dr Who when it was brought back but I have real issues with the current locum. Whereas the other Dr’s were mildly eccentric I find the present one borders on the psychotic.

That was an absolute understatement but I never felt that Tom Baker was a danger to himself but as for David 'Mad Eyes' Tennant, this man is a prime example of care in the community gone wrong.

As a former Pertwee-Baker-Davison era fan, can I give a bit of support to the current incarnation? I reckon the new Who is easily the best production ever. Like many others I'm sometimes frustrated and disappointed, but only because the possibilities of the programme set my sights so high. I could easily have given up in NewWho1, but then there was the Dalek episode and the WWII 2parter (which IMHO was better than any other Dr Who programme that I've seen). Similarly NewWho2 was looking ropey and then the Devil turned up. And despite several mediocre episodes, it finished with real emotion and I had to watch each week.
So, despite everything, better than ever in my book.
On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, chipolata said:
Another problem with the new Doctor Who is that Russel T. Davies just doesn't understand science fiction, that's why he's so wedded to these London in Peril episodes.

I think it's ace! And Tennant is now my favourite doctor.
Unfortunately, I hadn't even noticed that this series is a bit London-centric. (Probaby because I on and off live there) But you're right, it would be fantastic to see them gad about some alien worlds a bit more.
I also love Torchwood, so I'm all in favour of Russell, myself.
Without him, we may not have got the series back at all.
On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Liam said:
I have to say im a fan of the new doctor who, I think for the most part its been done pretty well. They are overusing the invasion of London thing a bit too much and the amount of Daleks that exist after they were 'completely wiped out,' TWICE, is just getting ridiculous. Ive always thought Russell T Davies got an unfair wrap but if he ends on another two part Dalek episode, his incompetence will be proven. As for Tennant being a crazy doctor, Id put him as one of my favourites among davison and tom baker. Colin Baker was easily the most unhinged doctor and actually caused mallicious harm to both his companions and enemies, whereas Tennant is just very eccentric.

That was actually quite funny for you, Dave, maybe there's hope for you yet.
As for Peter Cushing as Who, I quite liked the two movie versions, especially the one with the post-apocalyptic London. I much prefer that apolyptic vision of London than the umpteen or so Russel "Teabagger" Davies has served up to us in the new kiddie-friendly show.

Complete arse gravy. What pantomimes have you been to??
Thats a really outdated view, going back to Whos 80s period when they made it look cheap and garish and cast people like Bonnie Langford and Ken Dodd. To say that about todays version is so far wide of the mark its ridiculous and a little insulting to the people who do like it, not to mention those who write the thing. It really annoys me when people say things like that, looking down their noses at something thats made with so much passion and love. And where do you get the 'they cant act' thing from? What show is it youve been watching? Some of the best actors in the country leap at the chance to be invloved. And Freema Agyeman. It just strikes me as a faintly snobbish view to hold and pisses me off no end. So there.

I love it, and I watch every episode. There's nothing wrong with a bit of pantomime, and I watched some of the old Bonnie Langford episodes they're not as bad as they're made out to be.
It's the faux serious one's that can be a bunch of arse. Albeit Ecclestone was unusual in being the only good actorly Dr ever.
When I say pantomime, I mean it has a colourful campy sense of fun. Like Star Trek, or Lost in Space at their hights.
Scifi doesn't always have to be serious.

Not serious doesnt mean pantomime though, pantomime is nothing like Who; to comapre it to pantomime is a sort of sneery point of view; nothing described as pantomime, except for a pantomime, would take that as anything other than an insult. Well I like pantomime, especially as in it's hey day it was the most popular, and culturally sophisticated medium
Howz about I call Dr Who postmodern, which it is? It's endless clever asides, self referential remarks, sliding in and out of camp comedy, and high horror.
It's like nothing else, and that drab thing about a pie maker on 3 can only dream of being like it. In it's own way it's alot more intelligent than Lost.
But part of that strength I reckon comes from knowingly slack performing.
And Bonny Langford era Dr Who, was knowingly rubbish.
Ken Dodd, and Bertie Bassett guesting in the same episode. That's great in a weird sublime way.

I think pantomime is more or less used as a synonym for camp. The last two producers of the show have shown some fondness for it. They've also both cast good looking younger men as the doctor, altering the format of the show somewhat in that the doctor is now a more or less traditional romantic lead character, which up to Baker he wasn't.

No, Russel T Davies is gay. And according to that check list, any number of shows could be called camp. Spaced or the Mighty Boosh more or less fit those check points, but I wouldnt say they were camp! And I think camp does generally go hand in hand with gayness. Gayness?

I've never seen Buffy and I haven't seen any of this series of Doctor Who, so I can't say whether it's camp any more. It's certainly used to be. One episode even had robot versions of 'Trinny and Susanna' in it. JNT's Who was camp in a different way - it didn't refer to popular culture much, but there was lots of whimsy and exaggerated self knowing - which are features of camp - which isn't just effeminacy and homosexuality. Most shows can still keep the allegiance of their viewers with a bit of camp, provided some barriers are not crossed. For me, putting a set of question marks on the Doctor's collar and a question mark on his umbrella, is tanking it.

I'm a fan of Martha/Freema, but she was pretty ropey in this. Tate has been slightly less annoying in the last three episodes but my guess is this because she has had less screen time.
And on the camp v non-camp debate - to me it's camp to the nth degree. Even the idea of casting Catherine Tate is high camp.

3 Really mental guestr stars. Johnny Vegas, Jade Goody, Tony the Tiger.
4 Zylons.
5 Dinosaurs.
6 The Dr keeping plainly bloody stupid things in his pockets, suddenly becoming really good at martial arts, and using a huge scarf for lots of daft purposes.
7 Jamie McCrimmon, Leela, or just a couple more fighting assistants.
8 Turlough, miore ginger public school evil aliens right now!
9 Time Lords in silly costumes.
10 All of these in the same episode at the same time.

THAT!
It reeeeeeaally annoys me that they're not exploring that avenue AT ALL.
There's so much they could do with it! And on a low budget too.
The fact that they haven't once addressed it means that RTD must have laid out actual guidelines to all the writers saying they can't write that in. Which is just ridiculous and weird.
And did I say annoying.

All of his films are awesome.
I don't really like when good actors get tied up in a trilogy that takes up about 8 years of their life and stops them making really great smaller films. (See Elijah Wood and Tobey Maguire also.)

I agree with that, the latter movies were not really needed.

If you were an actor, good or bad, and had the option of spending a number of years doing an extremely lucrative series of films, or a bunch of small ones, which would you choose?

Jack Sparrow is one of the greatest characters ever created.

I'd sign the contract in the big film and then sell the role to Johnny Depp as a much smaller creative film and pay him 10% of my money.
