The Nanageddon one springs to mind right now. Love this show, but I shall wait until its on TV. Im a bit surprised that three series in theyre not trying to push the Boosh more; still on BBC3 and at half ten, which seems like a rubbish time slot to me. Cant wait to see it though!

Yeah, I did see some; what was the point? If you have to censor it, just put it on later!!!! I think it could be pushed a lot more on BBC2 than it is, like lead baloon and gavin and stacey have been.

I liked how they made Vince more naive, like in the first series, and the more quick-fire, energised feeling this time around, but I can honestly say, with great disappointment, that I didn't laugh once watching it. The 'plot' seemed odd in a way that the Boosh has never been - I felt like I didn't 'get' the rules and I've been a fan since the start, and also I felt slightly alienated by the 'the horrors' reference, which made me feel like they were explicitly pandering to 'that' kind of Boosh audience.
"The hitcher looked so much better."

Tony talked like that last series, didnt he?
And its interesting to note some saying the effects and general production values seemed beeter, because apparently the Boosh were given less money than previous years to make it!
And, maybe this makes me odd, but I didnt find anything at all weird about the story! Its exactly what youd expect from the Boosh, lovely and odd and strangely random! Loved the pop stars skinny flamingo legs.
And as for refernces to pop stars and the like, they have had bits like that before, Razorlight popped up and Vince name checked The Kings of Leon, for instance, last series. I dont think this is pandering to certain types of fans, its entirely in context for the Vince character, and whats more to Noel Fieldings real life persona; he genuinly hangs around with the NME fodder.
Cant wait for episode two, I love the Boosh!

I didnt find it slow, and as for weird-this is the Boosh! The weirder the better! And actually, what was that weird about it, in comparison to previous episodes anyway? Milky Joe wasnt weird?!?! Yeah! I loved that show.
Julian's was all about getting on the tube and following someone home and killing them. I liked it.
Noel used to talk about making friends with spiders.

Anyway, that was a really good episode, I liked the Being John Malcovich style design of Vince's body, the special effects were surprisingly good, Rich Fulcher was great (I liked his character's end payoff with the pin) and one of my favourite Boosh villains was back. I did watch the first episode on TV for the same reason, but because I often work late on Thurs (and cause my vid refuses to record off Freeview) the online broadcasts are a godsend (as the BBCI Player now I have got it to work).

Series 3 IMO, is a totally amazing production, if a little (according to rumour mongers) unfunny in the most intricately, infinitesimally small slices, HOWEVER, having watched ep's 1 & 2 again, I find I am laughing at the more obscure jokes that I must have missed first time around.

Not seen 3. But saw series 1. Watched it all to make sure I wasn't being hasty. Never laughed aloud once. Smiled 3 or 4 times in 3 hours.
Dancing with a mask on your head is considered comedy? Episode 1 was more Strictly Come Dancing. Everyone seemed to be dancing. It was like Sat Night Fever on fast forward.
Charlie the chewing gum monster flying on a magic carpet, putting hairdos on household appliances was random assosiations to sound funny. It was a 60 second section that bored me after 20 seconds and the mention of a flying carpet. To me that's lazy. Mod wolves ditto. And an excuse for more dancing.
Tango Triceratops. Chacha Chameleons. Slamdunk dildoes. Anyone can do that.
That guy with the hairdo grinned thru episode 1 and 2. That shaman guy? did nothing for me. Totally unfunny. The word cheese was tagged on to make him funnier. A disposable character.
The episode about "but did blar REALLY blar" became totally boring with overuse. Ah but did it REALLY? Yawn. Yes it did esp when one of them delivered the killer line to top all the "REALLY " bits at the end of the first scene. From there on in the joke was blown. it couldn't be topped because they fired the killer comeback line too early. The episode end was a recycle of the first scene. Each line was predictable, being a single gag overused to death. Something that would get slammed in the writers section.
Saying "the gem of kabooboo" or whatever isn't a joke just an odd sounding word. lenny henry shouting katanga came to mind. and it wasn't funny back then. If odd sounding words make me laugh then I would go work in a stroke unit.
If the series 1 scripts had been posted anonamously here before they had ever been shown on TV they would have been torn apart. If you are being honest.
The best thing about the show is Moon's charm. It seems genuine. But I want to get WHY Boosh is so popular. But do I REALLY?
So if anyone can explain what they see in it I am happy to hear. but no "coz their well fit" replies. If they were two gross ugly guys rather than being cool trendy types would they have such a big following?

there were definitely bits i liked but it didn't give me the same feeling as the first two. the first two had those lovely mental twisted ideas which make it so different. i didn't like it that the boosh were famous in episode 3. they've never really done that before. i think thats why it felt self indulgent to me. the fact that they were booked to do a show, that people were copying them, that they were in a magazine. it didn't feel like it was about 2 former zoo keepers working in a shop. maybe it felt inconsistent with everything that's gone before. and the pop stars just turning up for the sake of it is starting to annoy me. thats what the simpsons did when it ran out of ideas.

Yeah, but come on, that's only about a 3 or 4 second snippet when performed, 10 at very most. Take an average Boosh episode, and I reckon there'd be more than enough similar few seconds scattered around.

Surreal? Out of the ordinary? Father Ted fits that bill, so that's not quite true.
It's VERY easy to write that kind of guff. I've just proved it. That stupid trailer about the rubbish dissolving, it's quite frankly embarrassing and quite dull.
All Barratt does if offer curmudgeonly feed lines, for Fielding to say something like 'She had a face like a pause on a CD' - stuff that sounds like a comedic analogy but really is just meaningless twaddle.
Chris Morris is a genius at using unusual wording and ideas, the Boosh are just purveyors of RANDOM LOLZZZ whimsy that appeals to 17 year old media students.
And I CAN comment if I like - it's called a discussion.

The little parody bit I did made me laugh in terms of I could have imagined it being in the show.

And this stuff is crafted and worked on, of course it is. You dont like it, fair enough, but you do seem fairly damning about the fact that others could find it very enjoyable indeed.
What got on my nerves about what you said was not that you dont like the boosh, i mean why would I really care, its this sneery attitude that some people have that this kind of comedy is easy to do. And I dont think Father Ted is really a fair comparison, perhaps something like Vic and Bob is more on the right level, another duo who are often victims of this 'its something students could drivel in the form room' attitude.

SeeFacts, I thought i was reading Boosh too. couldn't see any diffrence in what you had writen. It is unfair to compare Father Ted and Vic and Bob as they were true surreal but boosh is in it's own category. subreal.
I wanted fans to explain what made this show great but just had the normal its funny replies and I must be mad to ask such a silly question in the first place. I want to see what elements make it poplar but it seems no one can get beyond the coolness of barret and fielding.
Linking random words is psychiatry not comedy. Cock Slugs. Buggerflies.
If a boosh script had appeared here in the critic forum, before the show was known it would have had a kicking. The script that repeated the same "But did it REALLY" joke for eternity was poor in relying on one joke and putting the climax response to it in the first scene not the last scene where a real writer would have put it. Most people who hate catchphrase shows will be repeating that to their mates weeks from now. But will they REALLY? sadly yes.
one good thing about the show was I like the guy who looks like a young Hitler hippy. And I like that bollo the ape can never put a kiss after his name on xmas cards. bet fielding and the other one never thought of that. Or did they ... REALLY?

Some of the jokes in the first series especially (the Spirit of Jazz's hat gag and Howard's sentence payoff come to mind) were very funny and hard to justify calling it formulaic or arbitrarily contrived.

I'm looking at it from a writer's point of view. I've been in contact with enough zany media students to know that gushing out a load of phrases like 'monkey nugget' and other such boring guff, is dead easy and not at all funny. TMB is just an extension of that, in my opinion. And it angers me because it's lazy and there's no craft. The fact I posted that little parody which a few on here, and on another forum, didn't know if I was quoting the show or not, proves that it's the dullest kind of 'animal whimsy'. (Fielding on the C4 quiz last year proved it too - banging on about badgers and rainbows alongside the even worse Russell Brand)
There was a interview with David Renwick on BBC4 last night which I caught the end of, and the fact he's so eloquent and intelligent and we know he's one of the best craftsmen working in television comedy, it annoys me to think that stuff like The Boosh is getting far more recognition with younger people.
Too much young comedy and student stand ups are going down this route of easy whimsical rubbish, thinking that Random object + random place = funny. It doesn't, in my opinion.
I don't rate them as performers either. Fielding is utterly appalling (his only saving grace was in The IT Crowd - thanks Mr Linehan!)and Barratt less so - I'm sure I've seen him in a few things where he's been okay.
As for the 'Can you do better' argument that invariable comes up every time something is criticised - yes, yes I could.

i do like the mighty boosh but i can see why people don't like it. for me there are moments of genius which really make me laugh. but there are also bits which i think are really awful. that episode in the desert in series two was really dull. but the milky joe episode was wonderful. its also accessible to children unlike most other sitcoms out there - its about the only show i can watch with my kids.
its nice to see a healthy debate about it. it would be nicer if people didn't use such inflammatory language though.

Might Boosh isn't dialogue driven anyway. Its actually one of the classic rule-following sitcoms out there. There is always a few storylines and they always tie everything up, there are three acts, inciting incidents, plot escalation etc. From that point of view its well written and using the craft much better than some sitcoms loved here. It can be a bit too random but thats because it is the exact taste of the two writers, not many people will have exactly the same taste.
The characters are lazy-random people and their dialogue reflects that rather than the writing overall. I didn't think Seefacts attempt was anything like TMB myself.
But as long as we are not all repeating ourselves with exactly the same points then there is nothing wrong with Seefacts posting his opinions. I think it really boils down to you not liking the style - plenty do and I don't think you'll convince anyone different.

I'M ABOUT TO UNLOAD MY COMIC PREDJUDICE ACROSS THIS FORUM WITH LITTLE THOUGHT FOR THOSE THAT MIGHT BE OFFENDED. GOD, I'M A WANKER BUT I'M DESPERATELY SORRY. FORGIVE MEEEEEEEEE.....
Because they realise how dismal the Mighty Boosh is compared to Cook and Milligan?

AGAIN CRASS OPINION, PLEASE IGNORE.
I'm with Cinnamon and Mark and a few of the others here. Boosh is the equivalent of 30 minutes of BlackAdder with pants on his head, pencils up his nose, saying 'Wibble'.

"It that how it works... you say funny words and it works does it - you throw out weird words - hippopotamus and juggling - anyone can do that! I've got facts based jokes! (high sarcastic voicePair of scissors, made of glitter"
Being 'zany' and 'out there' isn't clever - anyone can do it if they want to.
(I now brace myself for the Boosh fans saying 'but its sooo much more than just being weird')

To which noel i think replied with 'no - a motorcycle made of envy.'
which was the funniest line in the whole show.
The boosh is funny and reminds me at times of the Young Ones.
It's great to have a show that is just being fun and not trying to be clever. Give me this over Gervais based crap anyday.

As someone else said, Noel came back with a great 'zany' line that floored Amstell, who disolved into giggles. Its easy to put funny words together, but not, I think, easy to do it well.

Last night's episode was pretty much laugh-free
also, Noel's brother is a terrible singer.
What's so funny about the line 'motorbike made from jealousy', anyway? I don't remember Amstell being 'floored' by a torrent of quickfire witticisms in Buzzcocks either.

I think Simon Amstell is just very good at making fun of people but not going too far (with the guests he likes!) which is why he let Noel have the last word. Saying that I think this series of the Mighty Boosh has been great, original and very funny and very few people could do what they do.

Seems I touched some people's nerves - which shows that the Boosh is obviously much loved. i.e. clearly I'm not necessarily 'right', it's just an opinion.
But, that said, its nice to see that I'm not alone in my opinion about him being over-rated.
And, I agree with ShoePie and Retinend - I think Amstell let him have the last word. If anything he deliberately left it there as Noel's 'surreal' comeback neatly proved Amstell's point.

Quote: johnny roulette @ December 7, 2007, 2:18 PMso why don't they then?

Probably because there isn't the demand for it. Some people, like me, could no doubt be 'zany' too, but frankly I don't have any inclination to bother.
Don't get me wrong - to get where Noel Fielding has clearly shows he makes people laugh... it's just really not my kind of humour.
The Boosh is alright because Julian Barratt balances things up nicely.

God, really? That man really can't act either. It really irritates me when casting a comedy properly is overlooked in favour of giving mates a job.

For the third week in a row I tried to watch this, really tried too, this time. Managed to keep going for maybe a full 10 minutes, then keep dipping back in to see if it was ever likely to make me laugh. Afraid not. Which is completely fine, most things are subjective.
The curious thing though, was not that I, in my early 40's, didn't like it, but that my 17 year old doesn't think it's funny either. Thankfully he's gone off my family too now.
I just wondered what their target audience was, or what they thought it was.
And I don't think that long haired fellow is as funny as Bill Bailey on Buzcocks. And some time tit, Simon Anstell doesn't seem to be as funny as other some time tit Mark Lamar.
There, I think that's covered it.

Amstell is much funnier than lamar. Fielding is funny or at least more watchable than bailey. I don't know why absurd things are funny but i know they make me laugh. I guess it comes down to personal taste, I find my family and after you're gone and green green grass all painful to watch but they are all popular shows.
I would imagine the target audience is probably 16-30 year olds.

As I said in the other thread, Simon did what one of you tried to do. Put a pedestrian 'scissors made of glitter' together. Didn't work. Noel came back with his line, and it did work.
Demonstrating (again) that no, 'anyone' can't do it.
It isn't just random zany words put together.
But for some reason, some of you can't see that.
Oh well.
And erm, kissing you say?...

There's a bit of a Boosh backlash going on, on sites I visit and at my school at least, although with the latter I think it's less of a backlash and more a case of people finally tuning in and not liking what they see. I think one of the worst things the Mighty Boosh did was the Old Gregg episode, which a certain kind of Boosh fan (I might say a rather large proportion of Boosh fans) find it hilarious to quote in a slightly mangled Old Gregg impression. Although then again, maybe I'm just getting annoyed because everyone knows about it now and it's the kind of 'cult show' that is wholly unremarkable to really like and know all the catchphrases etcetera, when I selfishly preferred it to be just something I knew about. I do think that objectively series 3 is not as good as the older episodes, however.
