Project Update

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Aaron said:

I've explained this fully to the committee already, but here's an update for everyone.

Basically, due to the iminent site expansion and changes that will need to be made, we won't be implementing the necessary TSP features (voting, mainly) until we relaunch the site. Presently, this is scheduled for mid-August.

Numerous reasons behind this, but basically the improvements should offer much better features (including uploading and hopefully better script formatting tools), and thus it seems a bit pointless to make the changes now, then have to go back and change everything around again when the new stuff is coming.

So yeah. In the meantime, we can only apologise for the delay, and hope that the time can be used productively by all for writing more entries and refining what's already been done.

To close, I know how annoying the delays are, but Mark and I want to reassure everyone that we remain fully committed to TSP, and trust that you’ll appreciate that our taking this extra bit of time now will pay off in the long run. :)

It better!!

>_<

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Aaron said:

It will. Aside from the features noted above, there'll be lots of things to make your BSG life easier; post previews, multi-recipient PMs, better site stability, normal polls as well as the TSP votes, (hopefully) embedded YouTube video posting, and so on and so forth.

All in all, it should be shit hot.

(If anyone has any other suggestions, please do PM me.)

Should also have pointed out that the changes mean that when we officially launch all the new shit, there'll be a 24 hour window when some people may not be able to access the board at all. Obviously this really wouldn't be fair if voting is taking place at that time!

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Leevil said:

Can't wait.

So for this TSP, will you be contributing sketches? Have you ever written or been tempted?

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Aaron said:

I've done a bit of writing in the past, yes (both sketch and sitcom). Generally well received, actually. Ho hum.

And I may indeed enter, but not on the initial rounds.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, fatbloke said:

Been having a brainwave (not often I have them) regarding ways to present sketches. How about presenting them in a very basic cartoon style like what Captain Pugwash once had?

There is animation software available where you can create your own cartoons, the software comes with basic figurines to animate and choice of backgrounds.

This must be easier than clumsily acting out your own stuff for YouTube?

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Leevil said:

I've considered animation for myself on my own projects. But you would narrow the audience down to animation fans and if you pitch the show to a production company it will look like you're pitching a cartoon and will cause some confusion.

I think acting out the sketches, no matter how bad the acting is, will give a better idea of what you're trying to achieve and the poor quality acting and low budget look will be forgiven.

Some sketches could work as animation to give the show more diversity and it would help if there was a big budget sketch, which couldn't be produced in real life.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, fatbloke said:

Then how about presenting work in one of those photo-comic strips that girl's magazines used to have?

This would be low budget, save on acting with REAL images that needs no animation even! It would be easier to put together and perhaps even a whole new medium for comedy sketches.

A photo sketch magazine!!??

Splendid, can you do the animated or comic strip stuff?

When I saw your first comment Fatbloke I thought it might be a bit too South Park but from a cost point of view the photostories could work. In fact it could be our own Viz-type comic ... maybe.

Glad you mentioned Viz as they feature some fabulous sketch-type characters and sometimes even have the photostory send-ups of girly mags.

If you happen to be low budget, crap at acting and can't draw very well, photostories are the ideal solution! How about we all send in our mugshots and see what characters we could develop from these?

Er... no. Look over um... well not here ;)

The new site is, believe it or not, underway however is in hindsight it is, somewhat un-surprisingly, taking longer than we hoped to build (we've been getting ambitious you see). Anyway I've just been on to the phone to the builders who constructed Wembely statium for tips and advice so it shouldn't be too long now (but maybe not till next month).

Has the actual cost gone up by 300% yet? You can't complete a work like this without the budget going through the roof. The general public need something to complain about.

So August is over and please forgive my impatience, but nothing has happened. Is this going to happen at all? As an observer waiting to participate (one of my sketches seemed to be the trigger back in January), I could be forgiven for thinking that this is a project that will not see the light of day. Can anybody furnish me with some more up-to-date info'?

We'll have to wait till the new site is up and running so when it finally gets going it will run as smoothly as possible.

Yeah, appreciate your frustration Wildjesusfishkid. Trust me, I'm more frustrated we're not moving on it yet than everyone else put together.

The good news is that the sketch project will definitely, definitely happen. It wasn't just a pipedream.

The basic explanation for the delay is I didn't get to take late July and August off work like I was hoping too (running this website is just my hobby you see) and so the new site isn't finished yet. We need the new site running before we get going so the required uploading / voting etc functionality is in place and so that those of us running it have the time to devote to the project that it deserves (as I'm sure you'll appreciate it's going to be a lot of work).

So, yup, sorry for the delay but rest assured it will eventually see the light of day. October all being well.

Maybe it's time for a bit of initiative, if not mutiny. Let's build a forum on Yahoo call it "The Sketch Project" and start uploading stuff.

No time like the present *innocent*

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Wildjesusfishkid said:

The idea came in Feb 2007 after a sketch called Bacon and Herring. I'm not optimistic.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Mark said:

I appreciate the fact it has been aggggeeesss since the idea was initially brought up - and I'm sorry for that. As hopefully you'll appreciate though, and as I have re-iterated many times, this website is run in our spare time - unfortunately we've had a lot less this year than we thought we would hence the delay.

You're more than welcome to 'mutiny' or organise the project on these forums without our input. It's totally up to you. If you were to wait until the new site is launched then the project will have our full backing - including organisation, the needed resources, industry contacts etc... but I'll understand if you don't want to wait another two or three months.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, dave bond said:

thanks 4 tht at least i know now lol, i think it would b better to wait for your backing though

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, fatbloke said:

Well I didn't mean "mutiny" so much - more "initiative" After all, lots of projcts begin with Yahoo groups just to get ideas flowing.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Aaron said:

Yeah, just to reiterate Mark's point (and BTW it's his fault, not mine - honestly); it IS happening. I have all the mechanics planned out in my mind, and it WILL get built. Like Mark said though, you're welcome to do it elsewhere if you so wish.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Duke Bilko said:

Like others, I suspect, I haven't penned a missive for these update pages but have been keeping an eye on things. I'll continue to watch and wait and just wanted to add my encouragement for the work that's going on...

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, David Chapman said:

Now the way things are going on TV these days we all KNOW we could produce a consistently funny six part half hour sketch show between us.

It really needs someone who knows what they're doing to co-ordinate it - I don't!

Do we need it filmed too?

Is there anyone visiting this site who has the experience to do so? I'm sure that we'd be cheap to start with.

On Wednesday 31st December 1969 GMT at 7:00 PM GMT, Fred Peters said:

Or we could pitch the idea of a sketch show comprising of a load of writers who met here to production companies, even set up a website to showcase the ones we will have filmed (plus all our individual efforts).
