Seeing as this political theme won't die I might as well link to this Charlie Brooker article, as I don't think anyone else has yet. I'm not saying I agree with it, but its certainly been causing a stir on the net.

As much as I like Charlie Brooker, that article is the worst of his that I've read. Strip out the anecdotes and the repeated "OMG LOLZ" bits, and you're left with three points. Firstly, CB hates the Tories. A media-type being against the Conservative party. There's a turn-up for the books! Secondly, he doesn't think Boris is competent. And thirdly, he seems to believe that people only like Boris because of that "cartoon" appearance, as he puts it. Which is rubbish, or he wouldn't be leading Ken by the two or three points it is at the moment.
Good rant stylistically, but doesn't really say much.

How does one become a toff exactly? What does it actually mean?

I read it and it says what I say about him alot better. He's a comedian, getting laughed into a very senior office. It's more what it says about democracy in this country that's so damn scary. Boris is funny, and clever, and surely deserves some role in British politics, but the mayor is post he just doesn't have the experience for end of.
Hague, or Osbourne, or even that bloke who used to run Hongkong. Any one could give Livingstone a very good run, and possibly deserve to beat him.
The fact that a media friendly funster, who can't keep racism out of the bloody magazine he edits is the choice. Shows that Conservative central office have worked out make an election as close to BB as possible and you might win.

One could have argued quite easily that Tony Blair didn't have the experience to become leader of the Labour Party, or indeed Prime Minister. Ken didn't have experience at one time. Boris has, as has been noted, been in various managerial posts. Good enough for me.

Well Tony kinda proves my point. He didn't have the experience, and did a really crap job.
Unless you really like him?
Except he didn't, listening to Boris is entertaining, Tony right uptill the end was electrifying. A genius, with a mastery of detial, and the respect (for most of his career), and acceptance of his party. Up until Iraq he was one of the worlds greatest operators.
Can you really say the same of a guy, who can't even keep a columnist in his magazine from blatant racism.
Both Thatcher and Blair came to the psot failry unknown, they were both also amnogst the most potent politicans of their age.
Boris is a very clever and entertaining guy. I love reading him, and listening to him. But he is not that man of destiny. And too beat Ken one of the worlds greatest mayors (look at how many of his schemes are copied around the wordl), he needs to be.

I'm still confused as to what forum you're reading where the majority of posts are right-wing.

Dunno. Aren't the majority of posts yours, Aaron?

Saki a long running columnist for the Spectator, and racist.
Has written several articles on intellectual inferiority in Blacks, and similar charming statements. He's not the only one.
An appology, or distancing is the very least one would expect from a man hoping to head an ethnically diverse city.

Do you mean Saki (H H Munro), a rather brilliant short story writer at his best, who died during WW1 or Taki, who used to be a columnist on the Spectator?

Ah Goldnutmeg, stay around these boards long enough and you will soon learn that Sooty's posts, while sharp and amusing, are usually written in a kind of cipher that unmedicated humans find impossible to understand. Eventually, once you have studied them long enough, all becomes clear.
Yes, he means Taki.

Being a Nazi writer, we really should be talking about the BNP candidate for mayor. Not these lilly-livered puppets of the orthodoxy.
